Furniture

Not all of the forty plus years of marriage have been good. Actually, I am surprised we made it past the first year. We didn't fight about money and all the things that newlyweds typically fight about. We fought about furniture. And believe me we fought.

Living in a second-floor apartment, we had furniture, not really nice furniture but we had places to sit, a table for meals and a bed (waterbed). Things should have been good.

The problem arose when Elaine decided she didn’t like the furniture layout in the apartment. It all started innocently she just want to rearrange the layout. We spent many a Saturday moving furniture around the apartment only to put it back where it was before we started moving it. This wasn’t a one-time situation; it happened a lot. It drove me crazy.

A new apartment complete with new furniture the problem fixed itself and forty some years later we are still together.

A few years ago I showed off my carpentry/furniture building skills and built a small table using a tree trunk for a base and a large flagstone rock for the top.

Sadly, one of the dogs jumped on my table and knocked the top off. I could repair it and I intend too. However, before I could get my tools out a brown van arrived and dropped off two small boxes. Two very heavy, but small boxes marked made in Cambodia.

Elaine told me not to bother repairing MY table, she just ordered two replacements from the internet. I could tell by the size and shape of the box's assembly would be required for her new tables.

Elaine and I spent four and a half hours assembling ONE table. It sent me back to some not so pleasant memories of our early marriage. We are a couple years to a milestone anniversary and I’m not sure I can do it. We’ve got another table to put together. I need to call a grandkid, our marriage depends on it
