It’s here!
As I have mentioned before, Elaine loves fall/autumn. For the first forty-plus years of our marriage, Elaine has made the fall colors of the trees her high point of her year. She loves the yellows, tans, browns and beiges of the leaves.
A few short years ago, Elaine discovered another reason to love fall. Football! Elaine spent the first decades of her life being indifferent to fall sports, especially football. She has a degree from a university (actually two degrees) with a college football team and never attended a football game. She went to her high school games because her friends went to them. She went to our grandkids games but hated them, kids can get hurt.
A few short years ago, Elaine started watching professional football while knitting. Being the lovely, attentive husband that I am, I watched with her. I can honestly say that Elaine enjoys her football more than I do. Elaine doesn’t have favorite teams, she has favorite players and favorite uniforms.
Elaine doesn’t have teams she doesn’t like, except for the team less than one hundred miles down the road. Elaine read someplace that the local coach said something mean about one of her players and Elaine now detests the coach and the team. Elaine makes up derogatory names for the coach and roots for the team to lose.
I sit quietly and try to get Elaine to realize these men are paid athletes and don’t give a (construction language)what the coach says (or anyone else) say about them. Just give them the money.
Elaine chooses her favorite players by their uniform color, hairstyle, number of children, television commercials, and police record. I’m not really looking forward to another year of football, but I do I love sitting in the same room with Elaine.
Oh well, at least I’m not driving to look at brown leaves.
God bless, Love ya, may all your leaves be green
Our crazy lives!
